6/40.- Montego Bay, public beach

This is one of the public beaches in Montego Bay. Some of the public beaches are as beautiful as the private ones, but I cannot recommend them. The main problem of these "open" beaches are the hustlers.

Jamaicans can lie on these beaches without problem, but if you are a foreigner you will have to go to one of the private beaches and pay a small fee. Tourists are easy to spot in a country where 95% of the population has a dark skin. A few minutes after a tourist gets to the beach, several hustlers will surround him. Some may be friendly, but others will be menacing. They will try to sell cigarettes, illegal drugs, and any other "service" they find appropriate. Do not waste a second with them. It is better to avoid them if you do not want to risk yourself.
