Not all bodies are cremated in Varanasi. The young ones, the pregnant women, and the ones that have not finished their mission on earth, are wrapped on a fabric, tight to a stone, and thrown into the river. As you can imagine, ropes do not last forever. Sooner or later, bodies come out to the surface. It is quite normal to see the bodies floating on the river during the boat tour.
