From picturesque mountainous regions (in the North) to awesome beaches (West and South), from noisy and overcrowded metropolis (Bangkok) to relaxed towns (Chiang Mai), there are many reasons to visit the country of the smiles. When to Go/Climate: Thailand's peak tourist seasons are from November to late March, and July and August. Northern Thailand has three seasons: May to November, the rainy season; November to February, dry season with mild temperatures; and March to May, dry season with high temperatures. Southern Thailand has warm temperatures all year round, with a rainy season. On the west coast the rainy season is from April through October, whilst on the east coast the rainy season is from September through December. Get in: Bangkok Airport (BKK) is the busiest hub in Southeast Asia, with direct flights to Asia, Europe, America and Oceania. Other airports with international flights are Chiang Mai (CNX), Ko Samui (USM), Phuket (HKT), Krabi (KBV) and Udon Thani (UTH). Get around: the best way of moving around for long distances are the inexpensive domestic flights. For medium distances trains are recommended. Bus is only recommended for short distances. Most of the islands are served by local ferries. Money and Costs: The official currency is the Thai Baht (THB), foreign currencies can be exchanged at local banks and at travel agencies throughout the country. Thailand is considered a cheap country to travel to. Length of stay: In order to visit Thailand's main tourist attractions you will need three or four weeks. But if you have the time, spend as long as you can in its paradisiacal islands. Languages/People: Thailand's official language is Thai. Ethnic and regional languages are also spoken in the country. Although English is not widely spoken by the local population, most of the staff that works at the tourists services are fluent in English. Food: Thai cuisine is rich and tasty. Rice, noodle, soups and salads are the country's main dishes. Safety: Thailand is a safe country. |
