Of course the town also has a rich maritime history. Michiel de Ruyter, whose statue overlooks the Scheldt Estuary where it opens into the North Sea, was a Flushing-born boy who enrolled as a ship’s boy and worked his way up to become forst a merchant ship-owner and later Lieutenant-Admiral of the United Provinces, who distinguished hiumself in many naval battles.
