12/27.- Zealand, Zierikzee

By the same token, Zierikzee has become a popular yachting and tourist resort. The Zierikzee windmill at the edge of the town was not built to haul water, but to ground grain into flour. The Zierikzee port, lined with small houses and restaurants, harbours both yachts and a fishing fleet. The wooden ship in the foreground is a flat-bottomed boat used in shallow waters. Since these boats cannot have keels, sailors use lateral keels called “swords” which can be raised or lowered according to the depth of the water. One of them can be seen in this picture.
