14/27.- Zealand, Zierikzee pavements

A strange but typical feature of Dutch towns is the manner in which property is supposed to extend into the street. Many houses have back yards, while in front there is only a pavement, on which people will sometimes place a bench to sit down and greet passers-by. Each house’s pavement is kept scrupulously clean, and even protected by barriers in the hope of keeping trespassers from dirtying it. In this manner, the “pavement” is no longer a “sidewalk” !
