Utrecht, Canal
As in several other Dutch cities, the centre of Utrecht is traversed and surrounded by several canals; some of them busy with tourist traffic, others quiet and restful. The banks have two levels: one on which trade ships would unload their merchandise which could be taken straight into the cellars of the houses above, and another for traffic. Today, the cellars along some canals have become small dwellings or artists’ and artisans’ workshops, while along the larger canals, they have become restaurants.
