The nightlife areas in Rio de Janeiro are Lapa and Leblon. On weekends, and during carnival, the streets of these districts are packed with party goers. If you join the action, empty your pockets before someone else does it. Leave your mobile phone, wallet, I-pods and everything in your hotel. Violence is limited to fights between locals.
