This is a local fisherman, with his humble boat. Most Jamaicans have a piece of land. The ones who do not posses land, have to look for other sources of income. Unfortunately the economy in the island is not undergoing its best times. High unemployment rates and the lack of future perspectives are common throughout the island. The production of fruits and vegetables is not a big business anymore. Big international companies control the prices and the production of tropical fruits. Something similar happens with the tourism industry. A few multinational companies control the big tourist resorts. They make all the money. Jamaicans get only the worst jobs, and the worst salaries.
Treasure beach and Black River are pretty safe areas. You do have to be careful at night, and in the countryside. Do not ever walk alone outside the tourist areas if you do not want to have problems. If you are cautious, you do not have anything to worry about.
