Mexico, located between the United States and Guatemala (and Belize), is one of the world's most popular destinations. Its main tourist attractions are its Pacific, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico beach resorts, its lands and deserts, and its cultural heritage sites.
When to Go/Climate: the best season to travel to Mexico is from October to May, the dry season, except in the Northern regions and inland, where temperatures may be below freezing in winter. High season is during Easter and Christmas/New Year, and July and August. During the wet season, from June to September, it rains almost every evening. Its Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico coasts may be affected by hurricanes from the beginning of June to the end of November.
Get in: the country's main International Airport is Mexico City Benito Juárez (MEX). Other International Airports are Acapulco (ACA), Guadalajara (GDL), Puerto Vallarta (PVR), and Cancun (CAN). You can also access Mexico by road from the United States, Guatemala and Belize.
Get around: Mexico has an excellent network of buses that can take you almost anywhere. Renting a car is also a good option.
Money and Costs: The local currency is the Peso. USD are widely accepted. Prices in Mexico are low.
Length of stay: You need several weeks in order to visit Mexico.
Languages/People: 100+ million people live in Mexico. Spanish is the official language. 10% of its population have one of the Amerindian languages as their mother tongue. Although English is widely spoken, learning some basic words in Spanish will make your travel easier.
Food: Tortillas, frijoles (beans), chilies and Guacamoles, served with a more or less spicy sauce, are found in almost every Mexican meal. Tequila and beer are the national drinks.
Safety: When traveling to Mexico leave your valuables in your hotel safe box (or just leave them at home). By night and in crowded spaces take extra precautions.
