One day Lord Shiva (the destroyer, one of the top Hindu gods), came to earth and proposed to Meenkashi. The marriage was supposed to be the biggest event on earth. Lord Vishnu (the Protector, another top Hindu god) was delayed by god Indra, and could not attend the wedding, which was presided by a local god (Lord Azhagar, elder-brother of goddess Meenakshi).
