On the way you will find local boys who will want to be your guide. Follow them, they will take you to one of the surrounding buildings, where locals go to die. From the building there is a good view of the Ghat. Your guide will explain you many things about the place. A small tip for your guide is expected.
There are different kinds of woods. The ones that burn faster are more expensive. The families that cannot afford them, have to choose the logs that take longer to burn. But most Indian families cannot afford a funeral in Varanasi at all.
During your visit to Manikarnika Ghat it is normal that a thick cloud of smoke coming from the cremating bodies surrounds you. Strangely enough, the smoke has no smell.
