46/48.- Bali, Festivals, Nyepi

Menu

Bali is a very traditional society. The main religion is Hindu. Throughout the year different Hindu festivities take place. One of them is worth mentioning, Nyepi, or Balinese New Year.

Nyepi is a day of silence and self reflection. People (tourists included) are not allowed in the streets. Shops, restaurants and bars are closed from 6 AM to 6 PM. TV's and Radio channels are powered off. Although there is electricity, lights should be turned off also. Nyepi takes place on a different date every year (it falls on the day following the dark moon of the spring equinox).

In the picture you can see some girls taking part in the procession on the eve before Nyepi in Kuta Beach.
