Big mountains (Es Peni and Es Bufadors) isolated the town of Cadaqués by land for centuries. Before the construction of the road to Figueres at the beginning of the 20th century, Cadaqués was only communicated by land through a narrow trail. The trip used to last several hours.
Today it only takes 30/40 minutes to get to Figueres. Before the construction of the road the easiest way to get to Cadaques was by sea. It was usual that many locals had never been to Figueres (40 Km away) or to Barcelona (180 km away), but had been several times to America.
