Near Diksmuide, the trenches where the Battle of the Yser was fought in World War One (1914) have been reconstructed. The appearance of the site has been maintained, but it takes more than that to understand the atrocious conditions in which this battle was fought as soldiers from the different armies were sometimes within yards of each other in muddy and flooded trenches. Photographs in the museum give a batter idea of what a battle in World War One must have been like.
