38/50.- Istanbul, Muezzin calling for prayer from tower inside the Grand Bazaar
Moving about like dervishes in a trance among stands of aromatic herbs, incense perfumes, honeycombs jars, cheeses, deli, jewelry cases, we find ourselves already in the oldest market in Istanbul Kapaliçarsi- the Grand Bazaar.
Dating from the times of Mehmet the Conqueror, the Grand Bazaar was enlarged during the reign of Suleyman the Magnificient; surviving earthquakes and fires came down to us from the 18 c. in its present form. It covers an area of more than 30 thousand square meters, with fountains, numerous inns, and a mosque. In the picture you can see a wooden minaret-like tower with a muezzin calling for prayer.
On a stand at the right of the picture, belly dancer costumes on display in the bazaar.
