Atop the hill at Anadolu Kavagi, on a site of an ancient temple dedicated to Zeus, the Byzantines built a castle,(shown here in the photo) Yoros Castle; on the opposite side on the hill at Rumeli Kavagi, 100 years earlier Manuel I Comnenus had built Imros Castle for defense and customs dues for passing ships purposes. Both castles have been taken successively by the Genoese and Ottomans, in the 14th and 15th c. respectively.
The remains of the castles have been used for long as natural setting for romantic pictures and wedding ceremonies.
