Lagos has its local saint, São Gonçalo. The western heights of Lagos, on the road to the fire station and the Ponta da Piedade, and just above two small beaches, Saint Gonçalo has his statue on a promontory from which he seems to bless – or evangelize ? – the bathers on the large Meia Praia beach, one of Lagos’ larger and animated beaches. São Gonçalo was a fisherman’s son who became a famous preacher and composer of religious music in the late 14th century.
