Although most of the coral reefs in Hurghada have been destroyed during the last years, there are still some beautiful sites a visitor should not miss. Local authorities are now conscious that preserving the natural environment is fundamental to attract visitors. The construction fever has not stopped, and it will not in the near future, but it seems that past disasters will not be possible in the future.
Some of the best sites to scuba dive (or snorkel) in the Hurghada area are:
- Carless, a coral reef in the middle of the sea, 5 km North of the Giftung Islands, Strong currents make the visit to this site sometimes impossible. Plenty of fishes (morays) and beautiful corals.
- Gamul Sughayar, 15 minutes from Port Safaga. Famous for its hollow coral.
- Giftun Islands, half an hour from Hurghada. Very popular Among snorkelers. Famous for its rich coral reefs. The photo on this page, and the following three pictures, where shot in this site.
