The Summer Palace has two entrances, the East Palace Gate and the North Palace Gate. I recommend the latter. I also recommend buying one of the guide maps at the ticket office.
Once inside the Palace complex, walk along Suzhou Market Street. This street reflects the personality of the canal town of Suzhou. This area used to be the place where the Emperor and his concubines spent their leisure time. Eunuchs and maids played the role of ordinary people in markets outside the palace. Nowadays you will find souvenir shops here.
At the top of Longevity Hill you will find the Duobao Glazed Pagoda, a Buddhist temple from the 18th century. This octagonal three-storey tower is famous for its small Buddhist statues.
