12/37.- Palmyra, The Valley of Tombs

The Valley of the tombs sits West of the old Roman city, in the desert. The first tombs date back to the Hellenistic period (around 3rd century BC).

For a couple of centuries, the richest members of the local families were buried inside tower tombs. In this picture you can see the ruins of some of these towers.
