28/37.- Palmyra, the desert

The splendor of Palmyra finished around the third century AD, when its role as a center piece in the trade between the Mediterranean and Asia fell. Since then the city became a small oasis village. It was not until the 19th century when European archeologists started studding the region. In the 20th century the city became one of Syria's top tourist destinations.
