Another of the worth-to-visit archeological sites in the Northeast region of Syria is Al-Rasafa, a fortified city in the middle of the desert.
The first settlements in Al-Rasafa date back to the 9th century BC. Although the city had no sources of fresh water, it flourished with the trade during the Roman period. Later the city became a pilgrimage place for the Christians, who came to venerate Saint Sergius, a Roman soldier who was executed here.
