On the central East coast is the city of Phuket Town, which has some big shopping malls, and some mid-range and up-range hotels with a very good price/quality ratio.
Phuket Town has no beach. This is a good place to stay only if you want to stay away from the touristy areas. Patong Beach is about 30 minutes by taxi from Patong Beach.
