In the 13th century the Anjou occupied the city, and with them the city became a cultural center. Bocaccio spent his youth in this city, where he fell in love with Fiammetta (some authors think she could be the kings daughter). Petrarca also spent some years in Naples.
In 1442 the city was conquered by the Catalan-Aragonese crown, in 1516 the Spanish king Charles V inherited the city and since then Naples was part of the Spanish Crown. During this period Caravaggios followers developed an important pictorial School.
