Alsace, castles
The Rhine Valley is separated from the mountains by a fertile
plain. The
mountains overlooking the plain are studded with castles. One of these
is
the Haut Koenigsbourg (not shown here), a feudal 15th-century castle
that
was reconstructed under the orders of Emperor William II. In 1918,
William
had the famous inscription "Ich habe es nicht gewollt" ("I
did not want it"
-- presumably referring to World War One) placed over the fireplace
grate
in the large reception room.
