With its locks which make up for the differences in level between the two seas and its tunnel through a montain, the waterway was a technological masterpiece at the time. It has now become a tourist attraction. While at the time, the Canal transported loads of coal and barrels of wine and oil as well as horse-towed track boats, its peaceful greenish waters now carry the yachts of tourists, and its tow-paths have become tracks for cyclists. Along the canal, there are several "boatels" too.
