In Béziers, the canal crosses a bridge across the Orb river, and runs up a spectacular flight of "stairs" -- eight consecutive locks. Elsewhere, near Portiragnes, an intricate set of sluices allows to compensate seasonal variations in the flow of water, and keeps the canal from flooding or running dry.
