The Nividic lighthouse took eight years to build, but the building had to be started all over again several times because the base got swept away by storms. Finally, the architects decided to build a cable-way between the island and the building site so the work could proceed a little faster, to keep abreast of the wrackful siege of batt'ring waves (as Shakespeare would have said). The cable-car was used until 1955 to carry fuel to the lighthouse. After that, the fuel was carried by helicopter. The Nividic lighthouse is unmanned.
