25/26.- Ouessant, New Stiff Lighthouse

Menu

The Kéréon lighthouse, between the islands of Ouessant and Molène, is not shown on this virtual picture. It was named after Charles-Marie le Dall de Kéréon, an officer who was beheaded during the French Revolution. The lighthouse is beautifully furnished with shiny in-laid wooden floors and panelling ... but the waves here are so high that sometimes they pass over the lighthouse. One day, the sea broke through the door and left through the windows, and all the furniture was washed away or crushed against the walls.

The New Stiff lighthouse, shown here, guides and monitors the traffic entering the English Channel and the Ouessant Rail. It is modern and crammed with electronics, but derided by the locals as the "Camembert", because the shape of the cabin is reminiscent of the soft French cheese that comes in round, flat wooden boxes.
