Not too far inland, there are small villages where life is so quiet that sometimes people will leave their car parked in the middle of the street. Young people from these villages will work in the tourist centres during the summer, leaving the village to the elderly and to the tourists who seek calm and quiet here far from the madding holiday crowds. The quiet streets exude a quiet, peaceful atmosphere, and the people on the terraces of the small tasquinhas are welcoming and friendly, especially if one tries to speak their language. A cup of coffee here costs about half the price of when you would pay in town – and tastes twice as good. A small cup or glass of strong black coffee is called uma bica, one with milk uma garrota.
