Small houses abandoned by the native inhabitants have been bought by European holidaymakers and pensioners for a song, and overhauled and decorated in very good local taste. In this manner, villages which otherwise would have become ghost towns have risen to a new, cosmopolitan life, and small shops manage to survive.
