Henry the Navigator allegedly invented the Caravel, the three-masted ship with square mainsails and elevated bow and stern, which made it more resistant to high seas. It will be remembered that Christopher Columbus’ small fleet was composed of three these caravels. On the Monument of Discoveries in Lisbon (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), Henry is shown carrying a model of one of these ships.
