The fortress still contains a huge compass rose, presumed to have been used by Henry and his navigators. Among these, Gil Eanes, who is celebrated by a monument in Lagos, was the first to venture beyond Cape Bojador and thus to open the African West Coast to exploration and, unfortunately, exploitation.
