After the fall of the Roman Empire, Christianity was introduced in Verona by San Zeno, the black bishop (we will later visit a church named after him).
In the 12th century Verona became a free commune, after several dominations (Ostrogoths, Franks, etc). With its freedom a prosperous period began, and new constructions were erected --the Cathedral and San Zeno had to be rebuilt after an earthquake in 1117, among others.
