Another of the main monuments near Aswan is the unfinished obelisk. This obelisk is in one of Aswan's main quarries, close to the Fatimid cemetery.
Most of the stones used in ancient temples came from the quarries in Aswan. One of these red granite stones should have been the biggest obelisk of all times. When workers were cutting the piece of rock a cracker was discovered, and since then the obelisk has stayed there unfinished. In the area archeologists found many of the tools used in the quarries.
