Although the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. caused the demise of Pompeii and its buddy down the road, Herculaneum, grapes from its slopes were a staple diet of the people. Once a thriving resort for the wealthy of Rome, Pompeii, complete with its brothels and wine shops, was the playground for many a happy person.
