The Church of São Lourenço is a gem of Portuguese art, hidden in the countryside a few miles away from the coast. The sanctuary is dedicated to Saint Laurent, who not only performed miracles (providing water in a time of drought, giving sight to the blind) but also gave church money to the poor. He died a martyr at the stake when he refused to forsake his faith in front of the Roman emperor.
